Every child deserves to grow up safe but for girls, that safety is often out of reach.
Violence at home, in schools, online and in public spaces continues to limit girls’ freedom, choices and futures. With millions of children displaced by conflict and crisis, the risks are growing.
We work with girls, young people and communities to prevent harm and create safer environments.
Together, we challenge the root causes of inequality and build lasting solutions that help girls to live free from violence. Too many girls are being blocked from opportunities.
Two-thirds of the world’s 1.2 billion young people lack the skills they need to access decent work. One in 5 are not in education, employment or training, limiting their futures before they’ve even begun.
We equip girls and young women with the tools to thrive, from vocational training and entrepreneurship to financial literacy, mentoring and life skills. We help them build confidence, access opportunities and shape their futures on their own terms

 Aquabox family and community water filters have been distributed around the world to countries suffering from natural and man-made disasters, providing safe drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people.
In addition our Aqua-aid Box, which is tailored to support a family group, contains water purification filters as well as items of humanitarian aid to help with shelter and shelter building, lighting, cooking and feeding, educational development and hygiene.
Natural disasters happen all too often and when they do people are in desperate need of safe drinking water and humanitarian help. We rely entirely on donations and the fundraising activities of our supporters to fund our work and purchase the items which we supply in the aid boxes. Without the generosity of our supporters, we would not be able to continue this work.
Back in 2010 Aquabox started to look for a more sustainable and elegant solution to provide clean drinking water so appealed for assistance. Local engineer and Rotarian John Griffith answered the call by volunteering his world-renowned skills in the field of engineering design. In his garage, John started to create new filter designs to meet the requirements for sustainable and environmentally friendly household water treatment filters capable of fitting into emergency aid boxes. John worked with Wirksworth Rotarian and Aquabox volunteer David Haspel to refine the filter to the version we send out today. John, alongside his wife Gill, went on to set up Grifaid “to relieve hardship, preserve health and support education among people in poverty residing in developing countries.”

BookTrust is more than just a charity — it’s a lifeline for children who might otherwise miss out on the chance to fall in love with reading. Through free book packs, reading resources, and support for families, BookTrust gives every child the opportunity to start life with stories.

Neurodiversity and Books

What is neurodiversity? Neurodiversity describes the way every brain works differently. Neurodiversity can include autistic spectrum conditions, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, traumatic brain injuries and many more.

Representation through reading. We know that representation is vital in helping motivate children to read. Diversity and representation in stories, characters and illustrations in children’s literature affect how young readers see themselves and the world around them.

Diverse, inclusive and representative children’s literature can ensure that children benefit from a richness of perspective, nuance in narrative and good stories from the earliest age.

BookTrust is the UK’s largest children’s reading charity. We know that children who read are happier, healthier, more empathetic, and more creative. They also do better at school.  

Working with every local authority and across every region in the country, and supported by Arts Council funding, we reach over 3 million families a year via partners in schools, children’s centers, health visitors and libraries. This incredible network helps us to get children reading across the country.

Karma Nirvana Charity is led by Jasvinder Sanghera the author of ‘Shame’ which is recommended as further reading following this course. The book is about Jasvinder’s life and her sister’s. Her sister was set fire to and murdered. The book is a compelling read and an insight into pressures from families where ‘shame’ is viewed. 

Jasvinder Sanghera CBE A survivor of a forced marriage, she is the founder of Karma Nirvana, a national award winning charity that supports both men and women affected by honour based abuse and forced marriages. She is a highly acclaimed international speaker and an expert advisor to the courts in matters of child, civil and criminal proceedings. 

Jasvinder’s memoir ‘Shame’ was described in the House of Lords as a ‘political weapon’ and, along with ‘Daughters of Shame’ are Sunday Times Top 10 Bestsellers. In 2018, she was awarded Honorary Doctor of Law by De Montfort University, Leicester, and Woman of the Year by Leeds City Council and in 2019, she was awarded the Robert Burns Humanitarian of the Year Award and also the Sikh Woman of Substance Award.

The Freedom Charity aim to empower young people to feel they have the tools and confidence to support each other and have practical ways in which they can help their best friend around the issues of family relationships which can lead to early and forced marriage and dishonour-based violence.

They achieve this by placing informative material in schools, running schools’ programmes and by using social media such as a web site, Facebook, Twitter and apps.
