• MS Herald of free Enterprise Ferry The ferry capsized on the night of 6 March 1987, moments after leaving the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, killing 193 passengers and crew.
• The Hungerford massacre occurred in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, on 19 August 1987. The gunman, 27-year-old Michael Robert Ryan, armed with two semi-automatic rifles and a handgun, shot and killed sixteen people including his mother, and wounded fifteen others, then fatally shot himself.
• The 1987 Eurovision Song Contest saw the UK's worst performing entry up to that point, as Rikki's "Only the Light" received only 47 points, reaching 13th place overall
